The Roanoke Valley Volleyball Association is a non-profit organization whose main goal is the bring together players interested in competing in the sport of Volleyball at all different skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Joining a team is a great way to meet new people in the area and make new friends, as well as a wonderful way to exercise in a fun and competitive environment.
The concept of the game is simple, "three hits to get it back over the net without touching the ground", but the games' strategy and technique is quite complex and challenging. Whether you are a newbie to the game, or the most seasoned of veterans, you will always find something to work on and learn.
Players age ranges from high school students, all the way up to player in their 60's, all playing together.
Games of the different skill levels are played Sunday through Wednesday in the afternoons and evenings, with games of Co-Ed Sixes, Doubles, mixed Doubles, and Quads.
Here are some common misconceptions about our League and the game of Volleyball:
Volleyball is only for tall people or people who can jump super high.... Could not be farther from the truth. Yes, being tall and/or having a vertical helps, but there are plenty of roles that one can fill if your were not blessed with a 7 ft frame. Defensive Specialists, setters, liberos, are all CRITICAL positions, equal to, if not more important the a hitter. You can be 4 feet tall and be a great passer or defensive player, I want you on my team.
Volleyball is a sissy sport...
Come watch a BB game ("Double- B" is the highest skill level of competition). If you can leave that game thinking that volleyball is a sissy sport then the only sport for you is ultimate fighting. In the more competitive leagues, the hits are hard, people are diving everywhere, screaming commands, calling out plays; it is controlled chaos. Now if that is not your speed, there are plenty of less intense levels that you can compete in as well, so don't be intimidated.
I have never played before, and i won't know the first thing about playing... The best way to learn is to get out there and play. Come to open gym and learn the basics. You will find that picking up the basic fundamentals is easier then you might have imagined. Now you won't be Randy Stoklos after a couple days, but stick with it and you will find that you catch on pretty quickly. Oh and you will probably learn who Randy Stoklos is as well.
I am new to the area and don't have enough people to make a team...
Perfect! Teams are looking for new players all the time. Contact the Teamfinder or the President, and they will gladly hook you up with some people who need you.
"Okay I am in, how do I start?" -
If you are new to the sport, come check it out at our open gym. Then, once you are hooked, Contact the Teamfinder via email, or talk to some people at open gym.
If you can rally up enough people to start a team, all you will need to do is register online at the beginning of the season and you are in there like swimwear. If you can't find a team to join, contact the Teamfinder or the President (click on the buttons on the left to email them) and they will hook you up with somebody.
